Head Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Hard hats are mandatory on demolition sites and protect workers from injuries. Prevention of head injuries is an important factor in every safety program. A survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of accidents and injuries noted that most workers who suffered impact injuries to the head were not wearing head protection. The majority of workers were injured while performing their normal jobs at their regular worksites.
Head injuries are caused by falling or flying objects, or by bumping the head against a fixed object. Head protection, in the form of protective hats, must do two things - resist penetration and absorb the shock of a blow. Protection can sometimes extend to the neck and face area depending on the hazard. Bump caps should never be worn on demolition sites, as they do not have sufficient protection for the hazards present.
Hard hats protect against the following hazards: Impact, Falling or flying objects, Burns, Electrical shock, Bumping one’s head against objects
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved hard hats must always be used. They must have the “ANSI Z-89.1 stamp to indicate they have demonstrated compliance to the strict requirements for safety.
Some workers benefit from accessories that are added to an approved hard hat such as: Winter liners for cold weather, Leather liners for welders with overhead work, Earmuffs, face shield, and welding visors, Chinstraps
Modifications to a hard hat, such as drilling or painting, are not allowed. This will lessen the effectiveness of the equipment.
In order to maintain an effective hard hat:
Workers should inspect it before every use for cracks, dents, or other damage. Replace it if there are cracks or damage. The manufacturer’s date stamp must not be exceeded. Washing should occur periodically with hot soapy water. Store away from hot sunny areas
The most effective method of using a hard hat is wearing it every day on the job. Hard Hats are required on all LCS Jobsites.
