Safe Following Distance to avoid Accidents
More than 2.5 million rear-end collisions are reported every year, making them the most common type of automobile accident. The likelihood of a rear-end collision is about 14 times higher than any other workplace accident. Root cause of most rear end collisions is insufficient distance between vehicles. We often call these accidents “whiplash accidents” because they can result in whiplash injury to the driver in the front vehicle. About 20 percent of all people involved in rear-end collisions exhibit whiplash symptoms.  When following a vehicle, always drive as though a sudden stop will happpen and practice the following procedures to help prevent a rear end collision: Maintain a safe following distance, at least one vehicle length for each 10 MPH. Draining Air Tanks
Compressed air usually has some water and compressor oil in it which is bad for the air brake system. For example, the water can freeze in the cold weather and cause brake failure. The water and oil tend to collect in the bottom of the air tank and can get into the valves and lines if you do not drain the tanks. Summer is the most important time to drain air tanks. Drain a couple times a week from all the air tanks on the truck. Most trucks have multiple tanks. It is also good to try draining them when the truck is on an incline. Safely working in the area of any heavy equipment requires the shared responsibility of both the equipment operator and their coworkers. Always put the parking brake on and lock out the machine if you stop work or if someone approaches the machine. Consideration should be given to the following issues related to working around heavy equipment: Inspection of the equipment prior to operation to ensure that all lights and audible alarms are working properly.  A defined route and clear visual path for the operator when moving equipment from the point of origin to the work site. Set up of the equipment at the work area should be stable and have enough space to allow the equipment and workers to perform the planed tasks. Use 3 point mounting and dismounting technique off of heavy equipment - NEVER JUMP OFF HEAVY EQUIPMENT.
